Understanding Your Prescription: A Patient's Complete Guide

What Is a Prescription?

A prescription is a written order from a licensed healthcare provider — such as a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant — that authorizes a pharmacist to dispense a specific medication for you. It contains critical information including the medication name, dosage, quantity, and instructions for use.

Reading Your Prescription Label

Every prescription label from Pharmacy 1 includes several important pieces of information:

  • Rx Number — Your unique prescription number. Use this when requesting refills online or by phone.
  • Medication Name — The generic or brand name of your medication.
  • Dosage & Strength — How much medication is in each dose (e.g., 500mg).
  • Directions — Exactly how and when to take your medication. Follow these carefully.
  • Refills Remaining — How many times you can refill before needing a new prescription.
  • Expiration Date — When the prescription authorization expires (usually one year).
  • Prescriber Name — The healthcare provider who wrote the prescription.

Generic vs. Brand-Name Medications

At Pharmacy 1, we always offer the most cost-effective option. Generic medications contain the same active ingredients, in the same dosage and form, as their brand-name counterparts. The FDA requires generics to be just as safe and effective. Choosing generic can save you significant money — especially with Medi-Cal, where most generics have zero copay.

Controlled Substances

Some medications are classified as controlled substances by the DEA due to their potential for misuse. These include certain pain medications, anxiety medications, and ADHD treatments. Controlled substances have special rules: they may require a new prescription each month and have stricter identification requirements at pickup.

Medication Safety Tips

  • Always take medications exactly as directed on the label
  • Don't share prescription medications with others
  • Store medications as directed (some require refrigeration)
  • Keep a current list of all medications you take
  • Tell your pharmacist about all medications, supplements, and vitamins
  • Ask your Pharmacy 1 pharmacist about potential drug interactions
